Perhaps he uses it depending on the opponent. Some opponents have good defenses vs blades.

Maybe his df powers make it tactically less useful except vs certain opponents or in certain situations.

Probably switched it with his pistols if he isn't carrying. He was holding back massively by not using his pistols as well, Haki imbued pistols > Haki imbued barehand punch and kicks. Vista even told Izo, pistols > swords for Izo's fighting style, so a Samurai dropped using a sword for using pistols.
