If someone’s on the verge of defeat, why don’t they just make a binding vow where they get a ton of CE in exchange for not being able to use CE for either a long time or even for the rest of their lives?

Miwa didn't get even get enough CE to bypass Kenjaku's reinforcement.

I think Gege's mockery of one time power ups is intentional since HxH made Gon's adult mode too OP and it created the same basic issue.

I think Gege's mockery of one time power ups is intentional since HxH made Gon's adult mode too OP and it created the same basic issue.

Gon was always that OP, it was the complete realization of his prime embed in his genetics. He merely made a deal and obtained access to it for a while by paying a hefty price. If Gege is really trying to clown someone he should look in the mirror.

Most people would get as strong as Gon? I don’t think I said that anywhere.

It still is a pretty well known problem on Togashi’s part. Thought this was pretty well agreed upon.

I don't get the comparison with Miwa then, I don't know what happened in JJK but it can't be the same thing because she's never been shown as very talented.
As a Pitou fan it really pains me to say this but I don't see any problem with his vow, what pisses me off is that the midget is going to be fine through a random deus ex machina. I wish the nen would give him some stuff like final destination, since he cheated it.

The point I’m making is that Gege seems to have made the buffs you get from making “only this one time!” binding vows underwhelming intentionally.

And it’s probably because he’s aware of the problem it makes for a power system.

I think a good explanation is that the strength of the binding vow depends on how big of a sacrifice the person thinks they’re making. If someone knows they’re about to be killed and they’re hopelessly outclassed, trying to make an Adult Gon type vow in that moment wouldn’t yield much of a boost since the user really isn’t making much of a sacrifice in that situation. However, if they made the vow prior to a fight which they thought they had a decent shot of winning regardless, they might get a much larger boost out of it.

I wonder if the “revealing one’s hands” binding vow works under the same logic. If you have a very straightforward CT like element manipulation, you’re not sacrificing much by explaining your CT to your enemy. However, if you have a tricky CT which you gain a lot out of by not having your opponents know how it works, like the inverse damage CT, you are sacrificing a huge advantage by explaining your CT, so you would deserve to get a greater CE boost from explaining it

It is not relevant whether or not the buff is much when you are about to die anyways. You will take whatever you can get to prevent your own death.

A useless buff at the moment of death might actually waste your CE completely and make things even worse.

You die anyways. There is no reason NOT to take the chance. Even if it ends up detrimental the outcomes would remain the same. You die.

Its not done or allowed to be powerful for plot reasons. That is all there is too it.
