Usopp's dad left his family while going fishing and his mom died waiting for her husband, Nico Robin's mom cared more about poneglyphs than his own daughter, Yamato wants her dad to die, Ace hated being called Roger's son, BM power hungry whore uses his children and sacrifices them, Oden's dad hidden like a coward for decades, Oden himself was a bastard, Cobra another cunt who almost gave away sahara desert, Sabo's parents didn't care about their son, Baby 5's mom forget to swallow that night and the list goes on
is this something to do with Oda personally? :choppawhat:

Well, at least there's Bege and Chiffon... Cobra also didn't really do anything wrong. Croc was just too cunning.

Speaking of bad parents, Roger doesn't get enough flak for how awful he was imo. He deliberately knocked up Rouge while knowing he'd never be around to be a father since he was terminally ill, and failed to cover up his tracks so she had to give up her own life to keep Ace under the government's radar. He also knocked her up because he hoped it would be his son who'd claim the One Piece next. Son specifically. He prepared the name "Ace" after his supreme grade sword for a boy, and Anne (no known meaning) for a girl.
Ace is justified in regarding Roger as a jackass, taking his mother's surname instead, and regarding Whitebeard as his real father.

Recently, the voice actress behind Luffy told fans something creator Eiichiro Oda told here awhile back. Mayumi Tanaka has voiced Luffy since day one, and the actress was curious about the boy's birth mother. When she asked Oda about the topic one day, Tanaka said Oda wasn't interested in exploring that side of Luffy's heritage and you would not get a solid answer. You can't forget... Luffy did have a mom in Dadan and still does to this day!

At its core, Oda writes OP for kids. He's told us this. That's why we have so many poop jokes. He does acknowledge his adult audience with puns, innuendoes, heavy themes, but it's still a shonen.

Oda is really childish himself, both in good and bad ways. He also goes out of his way to show kids (well, boys, mostly) that he's just like them, from the jokes about Momo being not-so-innocent, to the toys in his house, to the fascination with robots, etc.
One of the ways Oda relates with kids is by acknowledging things that adults don't usually acknowledge, ESPECIALLY the darker fears of childhood. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Vicariously confronting fears can be good for kids and teach them how to think about these fears in real life.

One of kid's biggest fears is "What if my parents secretly don't love me?"
Oda tells them that even if your parents are shit, you still have a chance at having a family in this world. Oda doesn't specify between blood-brothers/adopted brothers/half brothers. They're all just "brothers." (Unlike Doffy, who always goes out of his way to specify that Roci is his true little brother....)

Oda really seems to believe that the found-family theme is important for giving kids hope for their own future happiness. I guess you could accuse him of slandering adults, but that's kind of a knee-jerk reaction.

IDK what kind of childhood he had, and it seems like he's not very involved in the day to day lives of his own family. But a lot of people have shitty parents in this world, and it wouldn't surprise me if his lifelong escapist fantasy story might have something to do with that. But it's not like having shitty parents makes you a bad person or it's a knock against Oda to suggest that he might've had a rough time as a kid.
