this is what i think why the impel down was the very important arc that unlocked luffy’s haki and where he push his body to the limits.

1. Remember back when he fought the zoan guards? Luffy cant even scratch them but after they reach the 6th level and about to escape luffy had a chance to fight them again and it took only 1 blow to defeat them this showed that after the struggle that he been through his body got stronger and also his haki without even knowing it.
2. he unlock his kings haki to save bon clay. Just like i said if impel down didnt happen rayleigh might not be able to train luffy’s kings haki if impel down didnt made luffy unlock this power.
3. Luffy push his body to the limits. Remember his struggle during magellan poison? His body was so pushed to the limit that when he recovered to it luffy thought that ivankov made him stronger. Even back then luffy knew that he became stronger its not because of ivankov but its because he pushed his body to the limits.
