General & Others Why is Wano hated ?

#41
I really liked Act 1, but everything from Act 2 onwards was pretty excruciating to read week to week aside from a few cool moments like Roger vs Whitebeard and Big Mom clapping queen.

- Off panelled fights
- Slow pacing everything felt like a set up chapter, and the pay off was usually not worth it
- Almost all the beast pirates look stupid and their devil fruits are one dimensional
- Samurai are useless and ineffective, did not live up to their hype
- Still no major fights aside from Luffy vs Kaido
- Oden's raw stupidity made it difficult for me to care about getting revenge for him
- A LOT of plot induced stupidity, e.g. Robin forgetting that she could save momo from Kanjuro, Luffy forgetting that he has future sight etc etc.

Also I am so sick of seeing Bege and Lola in every cover story, it's gone on for ages and was never that interesting to begin with. I can't understand why Oda cares about them so much.

I mean we hyped the samurai of Wano in general because the series went out of its way to hype them.
I get what u're saying, the thing is Oda hyped Kyros as well by claiming he was undefeated champion & all that crap, Luffy also said Hyozou was strong.

If characters have no connection to the main story, then their strength will not be impressive, the samurai are only relevant for this arc, that's it.

I think there’s so much I dislike about Wano that I can’t fit it all on one thread.

-There is straight up no tension this arc. Pirate Jesus is literally invincible, and even when Oda throws an exploding Seastone collar on him in the middle of a Yonko’s prison, he is still beating the ass of every person present. Even Kaido one shotting or Apoo knocking him out just feel like filler and time wasting. Pirate Jesus has felt like a parody of his former self to me in many ways this arc but that’s a discussion for another time.

-Crucial events being off paneled for literal nonsense, Roger vs Whitebeard gets 3 panels and the Revos vs the Admirals gets half a panel while Kinemon stealing the baby pig and Luffy vs Urushima get entire chapters

- no new character is likeable or even memorable, their motives are either poorly explained or nonexistent. None of the scabbards’ shown interactions with Oden had real emotion or memorable interactions, and they’ve been such a major focus this arc, but I feel like all they’ve done is stood around and cried the whole time without me really understanding why they loved Oden so much aside from the fact that he was strong.

-Kaido and Orochi are the two shittiest villains Oda has ever written. At best, Kaido is a generic rehash of every other arc villain we’ve already seen before, just with no standout personality traits. At worst, he’s an amalgamation of completely random character traits with no actual personality or character of his own which makes him come off as a plot device and not a character. Big Mom is a far better character than he is, but Oda can’t stop using her for gags and punchlines which undermines her as well. Orochi is just a spandam rehash who appears to be comically apathetic for absolutely no reason at all. Aka, nonsense.

-Oda keeps trying to subvert expectations in ways that just lead to him treating all of his characters like trash. Luffy getting punked by Apoo, Kidd escaping Udon and getting re-captured 5 seconds later, the Big Mom pirates getting dunked down a waterfall twice, Oden dancing naked through the streets and then getting duped anyway, etc..in many ways, the main plot of Wano is just Oda shitting on is own characters repeatedly.

On top of all this, there is just literally nothing about Wano to enjoy in the slightest. None of the fights that have happened so far have been good or memorable. None of the new characters are going to make it into anybody’s favorite list. The villains are either gags, generic, or so far undefined.

The best parts of Wano have ironically been when we leave Wano to see the Reverie, Blackbeard, the Yonko bounties, etc.

This wasn’t exactly a well thought-out post, these were just some of the things I didn’t like off the top of my head. Wano really deserves a big analysis for how terrible it is, but I figure it’s best to let the arc end before that happens.

The characters - as others have already said, there’s too many of them, and Oda prefers to focus on the ones I personally don’t give a fuck about. Tbh, the most interesting characters are usually outside of Wano in the opening acts. As for the characters in Wano that I actually was looking forward to, I can’t think of a single one who has fully lived up to their hype. There have certainly been some moments for them (like Apoo shitting on Luffy), but overall, so far it seems like they fall short of what they could have been. Besides the Supernovas, the biggest offender for me is Zoro. I was really hoping Oda would give him something interesting to do, since Wano would be the place to do it, but nope. He can play babysitter to Snot. There’s still some time left, so we’ll see if Oda has anything else in mind for them.

Pacing - OP has always taken time to build up, but it’s absolute torture here. Especially with the last few chapters, you can tell Oda is stalling so he can have his iconic 1000th chapter the way he wants it.

Investment - maybe it’s just me, but Oda failed miserably at getting me invested in anything Wano related. He didn’t get me to care about the people of Wano, he didn’t get me to care about Oden and his family even after we’ve been stuck with his son since Punk Hazard, and he didn’t get me to care about any of the local plots (ex: Witching Hour Boy).

Tension - I thought Moria said this place was a real nightmare. But thanks to a number of factors, the biggest arc yet feels like a joke. The antagonists are about as threatening as wet cardboard and plot armor is through the atmosphere. The constant overhyping and fake tension doesn’t help either; WHY Oda had to do another fakeout with the Sunny’s supposed destruction is beyond me.

Writing - some of the worst writing since WCI, especially when it involves Oden. But there are odd decisions all over the place, like Denjiro being Kyoshiro, which ruined the local Wano antagonists, Kaido being a non-entity for most of the arc, Kinemon suddenly being able to injure the World’s Strongest Creature alongside fucking Kiku, etc.

Following the steps of the user Fiji, I would like to ask why many of you currently despises/hates evey single thing Oda has done this arc. I mean , some of you definitely want some of the strawhats dead seeing how you constantly drop that bullshit "plot armor" stuff. For me , just the lack of interesting samurais and Big Mom amnesia (I didnt lke Udon either). Oden flashback was normal , and act 1 was normal too, Onigashima raid is not even at its best moment so im just waiting to its conclusion to have an opinion on it. Anyway, for me , its a solid 5 out of 10 , but for some of you , its trash . I would like to know why do you dislike wano thus far?
Because it has been trash until now

I will give my thoughts.

The first problem was Udon, seeing Luffy arrested with Kid and the others dragged on for too long. Nothing really happened except Beast Pirate fodder losing left and right, Queen being rekt by Big Mom, or just slow training sequences. I think I stand with everyone when this is one of the biggest flaws Wano offered and this was only close to Act 1.

The second issue is the side characters outshining the main characters. What made Fishman Island work is that there were enough characters there that did not take the focus of anyone else. Unlike the Scabbards, neither Shirahoshi nor Jinbe pre-Strawhat taking too much focus from there other crew members. And as much shit as I give Whole Cake Island, it succeeds in that front as well with their characters. Might as well call Wano the Scabbards Arc and see them as the main characters than the Strawhats.

The third issue, the abundance of plot armor and plot induced stupidity up the ass. While Enies Lobyy had some of it, Wano makes it seem grounded as an arc in comparison. Usopp and Nami barely surviving two Tobi Roppo is one thing, but Big Mom constantly clowned from being seen as a serious threat is another. Even when Kaido taken some hits, he still destroyed the Scabbards in the end. Too bad the same can not be said for the rest of his crew. Minus the Calamities, neither of them are a threat at all. Babanuki gotten his trunk tied full of Plague Bullets easily, an old man rekt Alpacaman, Kid and Luffy beaten up Dobon easily inside of the hippo's mouth like he was weak, Holdem was hardly a threat to Luffy at all, Fourtricks and Hamlet got sidelined easily as if they were fodder despite being Headliners, a Tobiroppo like Ulti gotten clowned more than once (which isn't a good showing for the rest of her peers), etc. I would dare say the Big Mom Pirates looked better in WCI compared to the Beast Pirates now in showings. Not that it saves the Big Mom Pirates from being seen as a joke this arc either. Even Perespero somehow gets harmed by two Minks despite overpowering one the last time.

The worst case of them all, the fact the Whitebeard Pirates never thought twice about Oden even when he may had possibly gotten his kingdom taken over. Izo is from Wano and that was his home, so they do not have an excuse the slightest. For a crew that seen him as an ally on their journey, it only makes them all look worse than we thought of them in Marineford. Even Whitebeard is seen as the bigger fool thinking about Ace so badly but not even the very samurai he allied with. It looks even worse when Ace of all people was in that country and never told his crew about it. For me, this is the biggest plothole One Piece has to offer.

Yo I am loving the hate of Wano in this thread. Y’all did wonderful even though this thread was created over a year ago before I joined.
The problem is that Oda can get away with it because Wano is a Japan-themed arc. I don't think he really gives a shit about what fans outside of Japan think, nor does he even read our opinions. The Japanese fans are most likely very content with Wano and don't want it to end because it's the only culturally identical arc with Japan in the story, and that's why Oda is stretching the shit out of it in the first place

I personally wouldn't judge a arc until it's over.
What I can say what are some problems in my point of view.

1. The beast pirates where extremely hyped, yet they are underwhelming (just my subjective opinion).

I mean Oda has hyped them as super strong and intimidating looking creatures. I wanted a real Lion Zoan but I got fodder like Holdem. All the gifters and pleasures are fodder. Only the calamities could be seen as worthy. Even the big mom Pirates are more flashed out, the have Katakuri, Perospero, Cracker, Smoothie, Daifuku, Oven etc.

2. Some so far unesessary characters like the Sumo guy

3. The Samurai where also somehow hyped but didn't matched.

Wano Samurai where hyped to heaven yet I found them somehow underwhelming.

Minor complaints overall I like Wano. Let's see how things progress.

Too long,too long,too long.
"Uh but the stakes are higher111" who cares! You cant spend 4 years of the readers life on the same villain, its stupid. Especially in a manga about pirates,so a context where you should change location and villains very often, actually!

First, I think Wano has a big issue with pacing.

There hasn't been any sense of danger and nothing that makes me feel like I want to read the next chapter.
I wanted to shine those 2 points as they mirror my sentiments.

I have chimed in on Reddit about my lack of enjoyment for Wano, and aside from Stans, I got lots of "pfft. Must be your first weekly".

^Almost true, i got caught up on Volumes around the wedding party and wanted to find more, only to learn I had something like 30-40 "digital only right now" chapters!

What I wanted to say counter that "weekly hits different" sentiment is, "yeah? But I dont CARE about Wano." I'm not sitting after a chapter, mind ablaze with theories, intrique, questions, eager for the next part. Before I got caught up to weekly, times were rough & my budget meant I could only order 1 omnibus every 6-8 weeks. I would DEVOUR those Omni's, even Dressrosa (top 3 arc for me), and read them multiple times, scan every image for possible hints, appearances or references I glossed over. I have to force myself not to skim wano each week. I NEVER thought I would feel nothing but apathy for my favorite manga series.

I like Kinemon and the Minks, but not enough to care if they die. Oda had, what? 300 or so chapters to truly build up Kin & Kanjuro. (I also think its weird that Kanjiro then went to the other scabbard, not the one we personally saw get deceived and betrayed by Kanjuro). He had 400 or so chapters (beyond if you want to count T.B references) to build up Kaido, and we STILL got "oh. Btw. Kaido has a son. " some 50+ chapters in Wano.

I could keep typing word salad, but it is late here and I dont want my initial post to be rambling, so Ill tie it up with a loose thought of, "this? You had 4 arcs, hundreds of chapters and still need anothrr 150 to make Wano this spectacularly mediocre? The culmination to The New World plotline since P.H just limping to the plot points and finish line."

Wano has had some hype moments, beautiful art/designs, but as the overall narrative and characterization of any actual important characters- it's a collosal failure, imo. No ending, or twist, can make Wano go from "Meh" to "amazing" bc you would still need to make it through the pointless uninteresting meandering mess that is acts 1,2 and most of 3.

I'm only here on this forum bc I just HAD to find out if fellow O.P fans were as bored with this never ending arc as I am.
