Luffy uses his surroundings and experience for inspiration for his forms and attacks.

There is lots of inspiration for a Phoenix Man form.

  • Ace's death
  • Marco the Phoenix
  • Kaido's flaming dragon attack
  • Red Roc
  • Red Hawk
And now with Luffy's new Gear 5 form he can get do almost anything he wants with his body and possibly take any form.

Luffy also possibly has some Lunarian lineage factor possibly from his devil fruit from the original joyboy/Nika Nika

A phoenix man form just seems fitting for Luffy with his flaming attacks and all the bird references in One Piece

Excellent post/theory! There is even canonical precedent for this: Robin is capable of creating wings by spawning multiple limbs on her back. If Gear 5th allows Luffy to spawn multiples arms at once, he could very well create wings from them by mimicking Dommy Mommy Robin.

Yooooo, Luffy just flies to the moon on a whim, and is like, "HAAHHHHH? ENEL? YOU ACTUALLY MADE IT UP HERE? WOW, COOL, DUDE! NICE JOB! Wait, weren't you a jerk? Ehhh, whatever, how are things going up here?"

Enel: "Oh, it's the rubber heathen, what a shock. Eh. Everything was going fine until this asshole named Eggman showed up, and... well..."

I can totally get behind this, I kind of expected G5 to derive some fire based attacks since we already have one for G1/G2 with Red Hawk and G3 with Red Roc. Honestly though G5 is still in its infancy power wise, much like G4 I'm sure we'll see variations to it soon enough especially for EOS, so this would be really cool to see

Crewmate of Ace is Marco the phoenix, Luffy's friend

"Wings of the pirate king" was mentioned in Wano

Luffy is shown in flames in Fishman prophecy.

Luffy's mom will be revealed to be a lunarian.

Lunarians have wings. Its obvious.

You might be onto something, Oda did only give breadcrumbs info on Lunarians afterall
