Kaidou really convinced me that base Luffy would mid diff Law, but the more characters that clown on G5less Luffy, the more I'm beginning to straight up just doubt Kaidou, and place him as a fraud. I excused Kizaru because he was an exception thanks to the Pika Pika no mi, if Gaban is styling on Luffy too being old and just relying on raw stats and haki.....jesus christ.
Tbf tho that same Kaido ended up mollywhopping G5 ACoC Luffy for the entirety of Ch.1047, with an onslaught that would've slaughtered anyone else. Bearing in mind Kizaru could only match an ACoC-less G5 Luffy, even if he wasn't 100% serious.
Kaido vs Base Luffy just strikes me as how Kuri could go from matching base Luffy to outperforming Snakeman.
You can't take Kaido's feats against G5 away, and it's not like he used any power-ups to start bodying G5 either - meaning he was always that strong, he just got more serious. I suppose you can tell how serious he is by the level of his Bagua, and when he's at Death Destroyer he's damn near unmatchable.

The issue here is Kaidou got a full showcase. Characters are just coming in clowning base Luffy and then leaving unscathed. In Kizaru's case he even left G5 mostly unscathed.
It's getting harder to defend Luffy and Kaidou by proxy, I had base Luffy as a solid top tier (capable of pushing any top tier to high+ diff) at one point thanks to a serious Hybrid Drunk Kaidou back and forth. Now I'm seriously beginning to question it.
I guess we can just chalk these up as skirmishes and see what a focused battle will look like, that's the only thing remaining. But I don't have faith Oda is ever gonna make Base Luffy look as he did back in Wano.

No, this is like saying Katakuri couldn't look better than Doflamingo because he never went up against KKG. Doubt we are gonna see BG used like that again, just like we never saw KKG until it randomly showed up in training several years later, looking underwhelming.

True but tbf to base Luffy he's not used ACoC extensively on anyone since Kaido, and Luffy isn't a top-tier without ACoC or G5.

Egghead was just Nika Piece so ACoC took a backseat to plot, even Zoro took 6 months to finally use ACoC on Lucci. Imo it's such a major power-up that Oda will reserve it to maintain tension. I thought the same but I'm skeptical on this one too. Since the haki sparks appeared on impact in G5 against the snake on Elbaf, I have a theory that Oda was mostly drawing these on impactul panels and not throwaway panels where Luffy is failing to do much. Lucci fight is the only thing stopping me from fully believing it since he did land a big shot on Lucci at the end, but we didn't see the lines.
The next major battle will be the dealbreaker for sure on where base Luffy stands. Luffy has no reason to not use adCoC if he is struggling without it and the situation is dire, it makes no narrative sense.
