Roger and Luffy are the same to me with one not being better than the other really. Besides it's straw hat itself that links the two characters. Any character that wears it seems to be blessed with massive success and luck. Be it former pirate king and conqueror of the Grandine Roger who wore it as a youth, Shanks who's now a Yonko and top tier pirate, or future pirate king Luffy.
So to say Luffy had more luck and has not had to work hard like Roger is a disservice to the story. They both went through difficulties to move towards the goal and both were fortunate in many respects. Oda just had to abbreviate Roger's journey for the sake of the flashback's length. Also Luffy's journey is not over yet.

Luffy had one "easily" from Zou just like Roger
Luffy had "easily" one from WCi just like Roger....oh wait...
Luffy has to fight Kaido and can take poneglyph "easily" just like Roger fought prime Kaido....oh wait....
And OP forgot to read chapter 0 or literally omitted Garp words about how some time Roger got lucky....or never heard of phrase "fortune favors the brave"....and mistaking luck for plot armor...and forgot the fact that Luffy luck comes from most of his actions.....pity the reading skills of OP and just wanted to make shit thread.....

The competition during Roger's era was also much smaller. It got bigger after Roger told people about One Piece and it increased even more when WB died.
