After Ch. 966, I am convinced that Roger is a swordsman but many (most) aren't. But that is not the point of this thread.

But here is the question. Why did Oda show Roger's fighting style now of all times? Was it necessary to show Roger's fighting style now for story's sake/improvement?I

First point is that Roger stopped Oden and he would have to show some fighting style to stop Oden. But here is the thing, when Oden was charging, Rayleigh and Scopper were both ready to stop him. So, there was no need to get Roger involved.

Second point that can be made that it was needed to showcase fight between Roger and WB. But what was the outcome of that fight? Nothing. They started partying soon after with no scars or anything. So, leaving out Roger vs. WB wouldn't have made any difference to the story.

So why did Oda made this conscious choice to showcase (at least one of) Roger's fighting style? He had avoided doing it till now.

What add to the present plot tho?

Showing Xebec intentions weights more.
I was just replying to HA001's comment that Roger's fighting style was shown in this flashback because this is the only time we will see Roger fight.

The fact is, Xebec should be Roger's greatest fight and there was a potential for Oda to keep Roger's fighting style hidden till he was ready to explore the God Valley Incident.

But Oda went ahead and gave us Roger's fighting style (at least one of them). So, why?
