Speculations Will someone other than Luffy fight/defeat Akainu?

Who will defeat Akainu?

Based on what we know right now, the end of Wano should lead to the beginning of One Piece's final few arcs. With that, we all come to speculate how future events will occur and what the potential combat match-ups for the Straw Hats will be.

Regarding Luffy specifically, it seems there are 3 main villains that people like to bring up:

  1. Imu
  2. Blackbeard
  3. Akainu
In fact, some people like to throw in Shanks and even Big Mom as potential targets for Luffy in the future.

However, I personally don't think Luffy will fight all of these people. Even if the endgame heads towards a gigantic war, I can't see Luffy getting to fight more than 2 of these prospective enemies, given the nature of One Piece and how Oda has conducted things in the past.

In fact, I would say that the only guaranteed fight for Luffy in my eyes is Blackbeard, because it's a pre-determined match-up that's existed all the way back since Jaya. With Imu, we don't yet know whether or not he's actually a skilled combatant. In Shanks' case, we don't yet know whether or not he will end up as an ally for the Straw Hats. In Big Mom's case, we don't even know how big her role in the story will be going forward. In fact, there's even a possibility that she ends up as an ally herself.

The difference with Akainu is that he will most definitely be an enemy to the Straw Hats (and their allies) in some way. But if both Akainu (and his marines) and the Blackbeard pirates end up being involved in the final war, which they almost certainly will, how will Luffy fight both Akainu and Blackbeard? Some people might bring up Blueno from EL, but I just can't get behind the idea that Luffy would take out someone as strong as Akainu right before engaging Blackbeard. I mean I suppose it's possible in order to show just how ridiculously strong Luffy has become, while contrasting it with how strong Blackbeard will be by the time Luffy gets to him. However, my gut tells me that this won't be the case.

Based on that, is there a chance that someone other than Luffy will defeat Akainu first? Will it be Blackbeard himself? Dragon, Sabo?

TL;DR:
Luffy has too many prospective opponents and I don't think he will get to face all of them. I'm 100% certain he will face and defeat Blackbeard, but I have doubts about the others, and I'm specifically on the fence about Akainu. Is there someone else who will/can take out Akainu, and if so, who is it?

If Luffy doesn't fight Akainu then Sabo would be the one to do so. But since I think the Final War would be a long war + the huge investment of Mink medicine that can heals you to 100% + Ivankov's ability so I think Luffy is capable to fight multiple strong opponents in the war.

Hard to say really.

I think Akainu has a good chance to fight Luffy; however, Sabo has just as much reason to fight Akainu and he has a narrative of picking up where Ace left off.

Luffys Big fight imo May be smoker as Luffys first and final real Naval rival.

Outside of Blackbeard and Imu, Akainu is one of the most set in stone matchups for Luffy imo. You don’t just do to the mc what Akainu did and have him defeated by someone else, to me that would be crazy.
i mean it’s like in Naruto. Obito killed Naruto’s parents and forced him to be the nine tails jinchuriki but his main fight was with Kakashi and not Naruto

I see where you are coming from but even still in Naruto Kakashi is one of the main characters at least and Sabo isn’t really that in one piece. Not to say he isn’t important but I honestly don’t feel like him doing it will carry the same weight as it being Luffy, even as one of the three brothers I just can’t see it. I even think Kakashi fighting Obito is way more justifiable than Sabo vs Akainu.

I see Sabo vs Akainu to have a series of flashbacks and call backs to Ace who was a main character and incredibly prominent. Not to mention Sabo will likely reappear in the story giving Oda ample opportunity throughout the BB Saga to build up his character.

No. It's Luffy. No other character besides Blackbeard comes anywhere close to the build up or the emotional, narrative & thematic significance.

It's pretty much a given that the MC will fight the antagonist that killed the person dearest to him in the entire world. It's storytelling 101. No other fight is going to be as carthatic as it.

Edit: And for the powerscalers, yes it is still going to be a tough fight for Luffy.

Don't you think it would be a little anti-climactic for Luffy to defeat Akainu and have it be this crazy emotional battle, just for it to be upstaged by Blackbeard? Idk, it's hard for me to envision the course of events while accounting for Luffy basically having 2 final opponents, I guess we just have to see how Oda does it

Personally, I wouldn't mind if Sabo saved Luffy from Akainu so he could go and chase Blackbeard, and then Sabo defeats him in this kind of redemption arc to make up for the fact that he wasn't there to save Ace from the same enemy

Not really. The emotions of the fight matter more than most everything else to me, so in that regard I can't see Sakazuki being upstaged by Blackbeard in the emotional department. Blackbeard already made it clear that it isn't personal with him, while for Sakazuki & Luffy it is very much personal. It's mutual hatred and more potent because Sakazuki's actions had a much more direct effect on Luffy (both physically with the scar on his chest and mentally as well). Akainu killing Ace is Luffy's greatest failure, and Luffy becoming Pirate King will be Akainu's greatest failrue. Sabo has nothing comparable.

I currently believe that Luffy will fight Blackbeard for the Pirate King title which has been Luffy's main goal for a while now, so that will be carthatic and emotional in a different way than Luffy beating down Sakazuki.

Sabo fighting Sakazuki simply does nothing narrative-wise. Luffy believes that Ace died because he was too weak to protect the ones he loves. Sabo fighting Akainu does nothing to resolve that or address why Luffy failed. The only way that works narratively is if Luffy has to protect Sabo and actually succeeds this time where he failed before.

It is Luffy that was directly targeted and impacted by Sakazuki, and he's the only one he cares about. Both brothers were on Dressrosa and Sakazuki didn't even mention Sabo's name, but banned an Admiral from every Navy base because of Luffy. Just about every aspect of the fight you can imagine, whether dialogue, emotion, themes, fighting styles, etc are just better with Luffy...no other match up even comes close.

But will Sabo be capable to put down such a beast also factoring devil fruit mismatch? 🧐

And whom would Luffy take on that arc. Would not it be bad writing not to grant him the chance to avenge his brother directly?

Won't be a bad writing if Lufffy face 2 top tiers int he same arc? Or even 3? Akainu,Gorosei and Imu?

Maximum for Akainu will be clashes, Sabo will have AdvCoA and AdvCoO and Awakening against Akainu( remember even Aokiji with Ice was able to fight 10 days and even injure badly Akainu).

Isn't BB the guy that puts Ace on danger? Wasn't Luffy mad at BB in Impeldown?
