Pre-timeskip Zoro does have gags though. He can fits a Shounen MC. It's just that Oda makes post-TS Zoro way too serious.
He does have his moments preskip, but they were few and far between. Shonen MCs typically have that whimsical nature about them.

For Zoro to work as a Shonen MC, he'd definitely have to be like Ryuma from Monsters, and that takes away from the Zoro we know.

He's got Seinen all day every day though.

Depends on whether or not oda has been holding back on his writing. Zoro is super dull. But hes a shonen edge boy so its not his fault. But other shonen edge boys have been written well. Can oda write zoro like togashi wrote killua or Hiei? Like toriyama wrote vegeta?

Has zoro had any thematic relevance, internal struggle, self reflection in the last 10 years? But then again, luffy barely has any of that and one piece sells just fine.

Zoro doesn't have seinen energy at all. Stack him next to thorfinn, musashi, and guts and he would look like a mental/emotional retard. Even shin from kingdom has more to him than zoro.

I don't even particularly like Luffy as far as MCs go (think he is SEVERLY overhyped) but Zoro would be to be rewritten and given a whole lot of background info to be viable as a replacement MC. His spare backstory and overall relevance work as an important character in Luffys story but if this was HIS story? It would never work.

If you just took most of Luffys past and transplanted it onto Zoro and tied it into his future role? Eh, maybe it can work. Make Kuina a Sabo-type figure, make Arashi into Dragon, Pinzoro into Garp etc but the reason a lot of people like him now would have to be utterly removed to make him being MC work. And before you say you are just remaking Luffy that is sorta the point. Oda has given Luffy the background lore and characters of importance appropriate for an MC while obviously not doing the same for Zoro since he ain't the MC.

Hell, he isn't even a member of the D. family line so whatever Oda has planned for that wouldn't work.

Now, if you were asking if Zoro could have been a better RIVAL than any of the supposed ones like Law and Kid? 1000% yes, easily. His background works perfectly for such a role I will argue to this day if Zoro remained a bounty hunter and clashed with Luffy and the crew every other arc or so that could have worked out well, even if it came at the cost of overall less Zoro than what we got.

No. If Zoro were in charge, we would see shit like Goofy, who is drawn to khaki and joy boy fruit all his life.
Instead we are seeing deep throat with swords as a secondary main. And why did you answer with yes only to comment no here. 😹

If the op setting changes to seinen or some vegabond-ish
Then it will be great
No, then it wont be OP anymore. If you want seinen read seinen. If you want vagabond read vagabond. Why do you want OP to become something else and lose its identity?

Zoro would definitely be an interesting MC in a manga about becoming the WSS with the right cast to bounce off him. Would he be better than Luffy? Idk, one of my favorites MC is a battle hungry punk and another is a pacifist. It really depends on the writing.

In this story it wouldn't make any sense but make a canon spin off and assure you that half of the fanbase wouldn't be reading "OP". You already know that a certain group would stop reading OP just to be on our dicks even if their favorites never showed up in the spin off.
Zoro is the quintessential OP character, when he's on a chapter everyone has something to say, no Zoro no party.
