It being a devil fruit would be mildly disappointing so long as it is specifically the yami yami or gomu gomu or something.

All of his feats in Mariejoas, I also believe he did without a DF. And I also believe he'll acquire one in the next chapter, and it'll definitely be an insanely strong DF. My speculation is that it will probably be the Yami Yami no Mi.

As for him killing an admiral without a DF, it just shows that he has an extraordinary level of Haki. Without a doubt, he was the strongest pirate of Roger era.
