I’m not a sports manga kinda guy, so it astounds me that Slam Dunk could be so beloved & consistently making the top 10. Surely it can’t be that good. I always suspect a heavy nostalgia factor for such older manga, but even Hajime no Ippo which is fairly old doesn’t seem to be at that level of acclaim.

I really don't know. And giving the hype it has when it started people seem to also like in the western.

I think nowadays any anime with good animation will be hyped and liked by general public.
