I think its similar to how doffy/kaido lost
They likely would have all lost either way but the final clash was a final clash of will and pride
Zoro called king out on blocking attacks with his flame and acting as if zoro wasn't actually hurting him
King tryna prove otherwise gets out of it and uses his strongest lunarian attack in order to overwhelm and defeat zoro
Kinda similar to how doffy and kaido challenged luffy's final attacks head on with their own
Also similar to how queen was also acting if sanji's attacks weren't hurting him even tho he like king was just capping
