It's also a buddhist symbol of "The simultaneous brilliance and impermanence of life" when used in family crests, which is why I think the plant surrounding the Shimotsuki crest on Ushimaru's back is wisteria. Since there have been so many impactful Shimotsuki deaths, especially to Zoro (Ushimaru, Yasuie, Ryuma, Kuina).
