He has advanced and can use it at will as we saw when he coated only sandai with CoC haki. the trails produced from Ulti and ussop were after a clash while Zoro is producing longer trails even without clashing. AConq trails are also usually thicker than armament haki clash trails.

He didn't touch king and I mean when Zoro was coating his swords with haki in 1033, fodder got knocked out. I don't know how it isn't obvious he is using Conq coating
