Yoooooooooi
Okay now that I have your attention.
Newsflash, it’s time to face reality. Kin’emon is joining the crew, shocker I know. This is a very hot take, like hotter than a kitsunebi-ryu. Hotter than HeraxPromotheus rule 34. Some of you might want the name of my dealer right now, but that’s tacky, you’re gonna have to PM for me that.
So to start off this hot take, let’s get the nitty gritty out of the way, shall we? There’s this ukiyo-e faced elephant in the room and she’s here serving better tea than Wendy Williams after having a stroke on daytime television.
Her name is Tsuru. You know, the main argument against Kin’emon joining the crew. Using my degree in Anatomicalogical Stuff from the School of Hard Knocks, I can deduce that Kin’emon is indeed anchored to Wano by Tsuru’s drool inducing o-shiruko flavored fun box. But I need you all to do a mental exercise with me for just a sec, okay? Just play along would you? For me? Please? Ok. So I want you to close your eyes. Are they closed? Good. Now I want you to repeat after me.... F*ck Tsuru. F*ck Tsuru. F*ck Tsuru.
I don’t know what will happen to their relationship post-war nor do I care. It’s One Piece. Oda can have Kin’emon give Tsuru a long winded speech about needing to go out to sea to open Wano’s borders and that will be more than enough. His relationship to Tsuru feels so irrelevant to his overall character that he never even mentioned he had a wife during the month he was with Luffy and the others. That’s just a testament to how lukewarm her sausage oven is.
I know, I know I know, Tsuru JUST dusted the cobwebs out of her cooter, took a vinegar bath, shaved her legs, poured the champagne and disinfected the dusty old mat she calls a bed. It’s go time, it’s now or never. Kin’emon is about to Fuku Fuku no mi this broad into some lingerie and he’s about to take her on a one way ticket to POUND TOWN (it’s not a round trip because it’s Japan and women aren’t allowed to orgasm).
Then all of a sudden, Luffy BURSTS in, Kin’emon is full mast, Tsuru’s saggy titties are mopping the floor.
Luffy grabs Kin’emon and says “Now is no time for post-war copious comrade, THE SEA AWAITS”.
Kin’emon ponders:
Twenty years, no nut
Kaido is dead, but no ass
When will my pain end
Kin’emon sails away on the Thousand Sunny, face pressed against Nami’s abnormally large tits (as is customary for all new recruits), longing for the sweet warm embrace of his dearest Tsuru.
Okay now that I have your attention, here’s the tea.
Kin’emon is joining the crew, no ifs ands or buts. Why?
To start with, Luffy asked him waaaay back in Punk Hazard. Now you can argue that he simply asked a pair of legs that just so happened to belong to Kin’emon to join the crew but the point still stands, actually it justifies it more. Luffy found Kin’emon interesting enough to join his crew without knowing a single thing about him, let alone Kin’emon’s face. This fits the established precedent where Luffy's intuition leads him to find future crew mates. It was that same intuition that led him to invite Zoro, Nami, Sanji, Chopper and Brook to his crew.
Another reason is that the moment where Luffy asks Kin’emon’s legs (ergo Kin’emon) to join his crew is drawn to be a pivotal moment. Same as when Luffy first encountered Zoro, when Usopp first confronted Luffy on the coast of Syrup Village, when the crew was first confronted by Robin as Miss All Sunday and when Franky first confronted Luffy in Water Seven. The way Oda draws his scenes are done with a purpose and idea in mind, needless to say. This moment is meant to strike a chord with the reader as it lays down the groundwork for Kin’emon joining the crew.
Kin’emon’s overall chemistry and bonds with the crew are of considerable note. Since he was first introduced, Kin’emon has adapted well to the pace of the Strawhats and he has seamlessly integrated into their general whimsy and tomfoolery in a very short period of time. He is perverted, but not in the same vein as Sanji or Brook, he is more subtle of a pervert than Sanji (with some lingering shame) but he’s less of a gentleman than Brook. He is honorable and loyal to a fault, just like the rest of the crew. Something interesting to note is that Kin’emon doesn’t hold anyone in the Strawhat crew to a high standard other than Luffy himself. This is true for all of the other Strawhats. Of course they respect each other’s skills and roles in the crew but none of them place each other on the same level as Luffy as far as respect goes.
That being said, during the grand SUNNACHI moment that kicked off the raid, Kin’emon did what most of those present would never do, he declared that Luffy will be Pirate King. This isn’t something just any arc character has said before, not Paulie, not Rebecca, not even Vivi during the Alabasta Arc. Kin’emon has acknowledged something within Luffy that confirms he will be the King of the Pirates, just like the rest of the Strawhats. Not only that, he said it to an emperor, just like some of the other Strawhats have been doing recently.
Also, Kin’emon has already received his backstory. Similar to Jinbe with the Fisher Tiger/Otohime flashback, Oden’s flashback is Kin’emon’s flashback. Oden’s flashback, like Fisher Tiger and Otohime is about the loss of somebody that not only Kin’emon but the entire kingdom of Wano loved. Kin’emon just so happened to be one of his personal retainers, baring witness to many of Oden’s highs and lows. Through Oden’s flashback, we grow to love Oden just like Kin’emon did. Not only that, Kin’emon was also the retainer to divulge Oden’s story to the Strawhats reinforcing his personal connection to the loss of Oden. The loss of Oden and Wano is Kin’emon’s tragedy, it is what motivates his character and it is what drives his dream forward, to open the borders of Wano. Just like Jinbe’s dream of establishing peace between Fishmen and humans, Kin’emon’s dream connects to the world at large not just his own personal aspiration.
Kin’emon’s fighting style is similar to but different enough from Zoro and Brook that it does not detract from his character. Zoro uses three swords, Kin’emon uses two and Brook uses one. Kin’emon’s DF also opens up a variety of different maneuvers in combat. No Strawhat has a DF ability similar to Kin’emon.
Kin’emon is also the leader of an arc centric group, that being the Akazaya Nine. Like Usopp, Sanji (sort of), Franky and Jinbe, Kin’emon is already connected with the main group of his story arc but like all of the aforementioned crew mates he is more than capable of passing the torch on while he travels the seas with Luffy, even if his travels are short lived. This fits in nicely with the established pattern of former boss’ leaving their respective groups to join Luffy, because Luffy is that damn charismatic.
In short, Kin’emon is joining the crew. All aboard the hype train guys. Get onboard before it’s too late. I will die on this ship, give me Kin’emon or give me death.
