Well, he is one of the most "shounen cliche" characters in One Piece by a long shot.
So I guess you are right if we take into consideration the manga's demographic.

I also known that personal preferences are tied more to subjectivity.
You CAN create an objectively more APPEALING character if you take into consideration the most likely preferences of the audience you are targeting.
But saying it's a BETTER character is not necessarily true.
The characters represent different tropes and that alone already makes it a lot harder to analyze them under the same light.

I think a mature person can still be in good terms with someone as long as what the former considers "wrong" is not enough of a deal to consider the latter unworthy enough. In this case it's most of the times merely about wrong analysis regarding a fictional series, people can get past that unless there are other bad implications.:cheers:

Imagine this war situation back during WCI arc, especially when Sanji beat Luffy. 🤣 I remember Sanji fans bashing Nami for slapping him. They gone full abusive on her for not understanding the pain Sanji going through. Lol.

I also didn't like Sanji vs Zoro thing at first. But got used to it over last 3 months. Now it's mostly amusing. As long as they don't go personal with each other and also don't trash talk other characters, it's fine.
