We don't exactly know the circumstances. Who knows, maybe he was with Ashura Douji and the man who is presumably Denjiro against Kaido.
Maybe it was something like Oden holding off Kaido while protecting his family, he scars him with Enma, Ashura and Denjiro show up buy Oden and his family time to escape. Oden places them somewhere safe, while passing down his swords to his children, then going back (probably with a different sword) to confront Kaido alongside his retainers, which leads to him getting captured and executed.
At least, that's my suggestion.

You have proof that it isn’t Denjiro? Who else is it going to be?
The silhouette does not exactly match up with any other Scabbard or Oden and it looks similar to Denjiro’s previous silhouettes. The only other scabbard with a long ponytail is Okiku but this figure is nowhere near as effeminate as Okiku.
So could it be someone else? Yes, it could be but chances are it most likely is Denjiro.
Not sure why you feel the need for people to whip out definitive proof that it is without a doubt Denjiro when currently there is no definitive proof either way. Just minor scenes that point to a logical but not yet confirmed assumption.
