I get where you're coming from and he did regress as a character in general. Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I remember, technically he never cared about food being spoiled or altered. His introduction is him arguing with a guy because there was a bug in his soup, which he thought was nothing to be bothered about. What he despises is using food as a means to kill people because he cooks for the exact opposite reason : save people's life. Them being invigorated by his food is the only thing he cares about.
