I don't really get what people are saying when they say that Toei didn't try with the filler for Whitebeard and Roger, but I'd argue, they definitely do go incredibly hard. I wouldn't say it was underwhelming in the least.

This episode had a lot of incredible animation and animators on it. I'll go through the opening fight scene by scene, but first I'd like to say that even outside of the action scenes, there was a lot of nice character acting animation in the first half of the episode that added a level of expressiveness to the character's emoting. Stuff like Roger point at Oden, that nice bit of eye animation where Oden makes up his mind, or when he lurches forward in surprise, and Whitebeard creating quakes were all really nicely animated things that gave that scene a level of movement that enhanced the character drama. Certainly not the most noteworthy part of the episode, but still nice to see some level of animation consistency outside of fight scenes.

The opening brawl between the Whitebeard and Roger pirates was animated by Masami Mori. It was a really solid scene from him, even if it wasn't as lengthy as his work on 957. Lots of cool stuff here.

Takeshi Maenami, another phenonemal animator handled the later parts of the Whitebeard v Roger clash. Lots of cool impact frames and poses that I enjoy, even if the action isn't extensive and more effects based.

The opening clash of the episode was animated by Tu Yong Ce, who was also an animation supervisor during this scene. His scene has a lot of great acting. His character art is as strong as also. The last 10 seconds of the clip is animated by Junwen Tan, whose pretty much become Tu's accomplice effects animator at this rate.

Tu also animated another short bit of action with the Whitebeard v Roger pirates.

I think something really exciting, is that a fan of the series actually made his animation debut on the show this episode. He didn't animate a particularly action heavy scene, but his work this episode was still stand out nonetheless. He has really interesting line art and effects. Hope to see more from him in the future. I really enjoyed the cut of Oden emerging from the smoke.
(I'd post his twitter confirmation, but Worstgen has a limit on the number of media links allowable).
Overall, aside from the action, I thought the episode was really solid. I did prefer the first half to the second, but the second half was still pretty fun, with Oden's shenangins making him a very endearing character in the anime. I really enjoyed his little dance about making oden.

Y'all tryna disrespect Rayleigh? Are we forgetting Whitebeard stalled Roger without even using his df?
just keeps confirming whitebeard>roger
Also Oden and roger left-hand man stalling
:finally:
:kayneshrug:I never knew Kaido was this weak to get beat by oden who can only stall scopper
Also people can stop saying Whitebeard made the seas tilt with just his voice, it took 3 gura attack whilst MF WB took it 1 attack

Solid episode
  • I didn’t like Whitebeards incessant laugh
  • And it seeped into Rogers laugh
  • Was this the first use of a grenade in the story in the past? Lmao
  • Marco was babied by Rayleigh
  • There was nobody besides Whitebeard to take on Rayleigh. It’s sad when ur the strongest, no ones a challenge
  • Rogers adventures mirror Luffys. It’s amazing. I miss Luffy so much.
  • And probably the most important scene of the episode:
Shanks pulls up to WB and asks for Marco. Marco doesn’t go.

Big Mom pulls up to Kaido and asks for King. And King doesn’t go.

Roger comes up to Whitebeard and asks for Oden. And Oden goes. LMFAOOOO. I think it said it the manga Oden was even more fascinated by Roger than Whitebeard. Roger is BUILT DIFFERENT

:gokulaugh:

I hope Luffy pulls up to Dragon and asks Sabo to join his crew or to the Marines and asks Fujitora to join and he says yes or something. Oda gimme this.

Confirmation from the fan who animated this scene from the episode. I'm actually in a discord server with him. It was kind of surreal watching an episode live, waiting for one of the animators scenes to show up. It was a good thing that his work was immediately obvious. It would have been awkward for that server channel if we couldn't tell which scene he did while watching the episode with him.:milaugh:

  • That line up with name drops of members of both crews was fantastic.:myman:

  • You two destroying the island deserved a good chuckle, but come on it wasn't that funny.
  • Rayleigh with a finger showing the other first mates how it's done :kata:

  • That dramatic music when Roger bows before Oden sells the entire scene. What a great piece.

  • So Whitebeard just punches the air when he's angry? Like Blackbeard making Beehive island shake not with his laugh but because he got up and punched it. Awkward but the anime keeping it consistent.
  • :finally:Luffy and Blackbeard developing a broship like Shanks and Buggy is inevitable.
  • Losing your best man to your rival, gotta feel for Whitey-kichi-chan:josad:

  • After Hiyori felt Roger's mustache, she was never satisfied by the men of Wano ever again :madmonk:

  • Someone at Toei loves close ups of Shank's crotch.

  • Gaban is just upset because Oden replaced him as Roger's left hand man.
  • Oden being a thief and getting a grenade tossed at him over some potatoes. :milaugh:This filler sure got dramatic quick.

  • The Oden song was a great way to end to end the episode, but his dance needs a little more work.
Great episode. Those amazing short fight sequences at the beginning, a treasure even if too short. The art and direction still on point the rest of the episode. Mostly good OST choices too, loved Roger's piece and Oden's dance. The thing I will criticize is Roger and Whitebeard's voice acting this episode. Their extended forced laugh did not sit well with me. Roger bowing to Oden, a powerful scene showing how such a legendary man will easily bow his head to his rival to achieve his dream, did not fully come across as the VA lacked passion. That filler scene with Oden fighting fodder in Jaya does look like extra time that should have gone to Roger vs Whitebeard, but it's nice that we saw Gaban and Oden easing tensions on screen. Gaban has basically gotten nothing over the lifetime of the manga so I'll cherish his little outing here just for that reason.

Visiting some old islands next episode with Roger and the boys. I'm already getting nostalgic.

Yup man that nostalgia hits different given how far we’ve come

That's when you know anime smoked too much

Rayleigh didn't clash Marco or teach
In the manga, buggy and shanks were put with Marco, teach and jozu to interact

Vista seemed to fight Ray.

Oden didn't fight Scopper lol
No hints... it was either ray + shopper vs oden or Roger vs Oden
Or Oden vs Rest
Rayleigh neg diffed Hybrid Marco with just 1 finger :suresure:
