where was it stated that Oden has bad sense of direction?

Luffy didn't ask to follow him. He asked them to become his nakama. You are mistaking following with become nakama. He didn't ask SHGF to follow him.
If you go by that way Zoro didn't ask to be in Luffy ship like Oden asked WB to take him in his ship.
Guess you completely omitted ID/MF from your memory where people followed Luffy on their accord. Heck even WB asked his crew mates to pave a way for Luffy.

Zoro's has charisma but it is nothing compared to Luffy. Heck even similar incidents are there for every SH. Each SH is/was leader of their own group with an exception of Robin.

This chapter showed that Oden is actually more like Zoro.

Nope, Luffy parallels Oden in terms of situations. Oden going through trials by Whitebeard is similar to Luffy's childhood as well.
Roger and Shanks are also Swordsman, so the Zoro parallel does not work.

If you go back and read chapter 1, you will see Luffy only spent time working on his devil fruit control since he was a kid.

He never lifted weights until Wano.
He left Dawn Island in the East Blue the weakest sea in the world, stronger than Enel, Arlong and Crocodile -a Warlord of the sea.
He was warlord level in the east blue. Not inly that, but he Mid-Diffed Arlong in the manga, a pirate from the grandline.
All he did with the logia was touch them.
Look at what Luffy dealing with at the age of 7.
