Luffy's insane growth rate after 2 weeks and continued defiance towards the goal of PK are the factors at play.

Yamato is still likely a mid diff material for Kaido, meanwhile Kizaru and Akainu were clearly displayed as much superior to Old Whitebeard who himself was likely more than mid difficulty for Kaido or at best as much.
