I think Rayleigh , but maybe he wasn't formally the WSS , he didn't have a black blade like past WSS ( Ryuma ) current
( Mihawk ) future ( Zoro )

i don't think Roger was a Swordsman , he held a gun , with his another arm that he also could've controlled Advanced Conqueror with , this is why i think Shanks is a Swordsman because he has 1 arm which he held Gryphon with , besides Mihawk challenged him anyway , why would Mihawk challenge someone who's not a Swordsman

That means nothing tbh. We saw him clash with Whitebeard using a sword. That pretty much confirms him as a swordsman.

Well if roger was indeed the wss swordsman then ray didn’t got the title by default just no one had the title anymore cuz ray retired so there is no way he got it by default he was inactive so mihawk had do be recognised as strong as roger to get the title.

now if ray was wss swordsman then again mihawk should have defeated him shortly after roger execution cuz as I said above ray got retired and inactive and I don’t think young mihawk was so strong yet so again he just got recognised by the rest as strong as ray.

Or was oden and mihawk Slaughtered him before he got back to Wano giving him some nasty injuries and therefore wouldn’t perform at full power against Kaido abd he died .

cant think anyone else for now 😁

I'm starting to suspect that the only two WSS that we've had have been Ryuma and Mihawk, and that both got the title for being the only ones able to turn their swords black. So it'll be the case that Mihawk=Shanks, in a similar fashion to Roger and Whitebeard being equals, but Mihawk turned Yoru black so he's the WSS.

Obviously that'll go out the window if Zoro turns Enma black this arc, cause it's too early for him to accomplish his dream.

Roger wasn't introduced as WSS.

until we get some more info I assume the previous holder of the title was a loner like Mihawk.
someone we have not heard of yet.
not enough influence besides power so not worth mentioning.

that, or possible guys:
shiki
rayleigh
roger
moriah (lol)
shanks
koshiro

Huh? Haven't ALL these guysa also NOT been introduced as WSS? Why would that change now? You expect Shanks to get reintroduced as former WSS after 1000 chapters of it never being brought up? Okay then why would it matter? Like whats the context that actually requires us to know who the previous WSS was?

See the only person who could possibly care is Zoro not Mihawk since Mihawk achieved his goal so he don't care about anything else. But even then with Zoro we have clear signs he also doesn't care about anything else. Gyukimaru was praising the godliness of Ryuma right in front of his eyes and everyone in the community thought he would give a shit but nope. He wanted his sword back whether Ryuma was the god of swords or not. So once again it Literally doesn't matter who the possible previous WSS was even to Zoro. Therefore Oda won't bring it up since apparently no one in yhe story would care.

The only possible way we can get any confirmation about who the previous WSS was is from Mihawk's backstory explaining how he became WSS and that's ONLY if that title existed before Mihawk achieved it to begin with since there's also no indication that there was a World's strongest man or creature title before Whitebeard or Kaido so once again it could be the same thing that these guys were all just so impressive that these titles were literally created just for them

There probably wasn't one. Perhaps in that era, there were so many big players in that era, there might've been no clear cut top dog. Newgate conspicuously hasn't received the WSM narration box all throughout the flashback. He could've received it after Roger's death.

@ImmaIvanoM do not get me wrong.
the first psragraph is my opinion.
the seconds is a list of characters who could have possibly been WSS even if they were not introduced as such. roger is there too.

wether the title existed or not does not even matter. albeit I am sure it did.
someone was THE strongest before Mihawk.
all Mihawks title does is cut away all room for interpretation.

based on rayleigh that has the same coat as mihawk it's like oda implies that rayleigh was. but then what about oden, he was second strongest swordman after rayliegh?

Does that mean Zoro will also get a similar coat? That the coat is a sign of being WSS?

maybe, it's like the captain coat wb and roger have and luffy will get, or the admirals marine coat. or it's just there to hint that rayliegh was wss, not that it's forced to wear. maybe rayliegh and mihawk come from the same country that they all dress like that there, or they related in blood.
