1. We all saw King bleed from attacks dealt by Marco and Zoro, and he quickly recovered from it. That is easily just his natural zoan recovery.
2. King uses the flame on his back for regular fire attacks
3. King is seemingly getting stronger and tougher
4. King said that its more than his DF helping him take the attacks
This makes me believe that whatever damage King receives allows him to store in the flame instead, making it bigger. The more he stores, the stronger and tougher he gets. However, the flame gets weaker when King attacks back so he has to keep stacking.
Think of it as King having 30 Flames, and when Zoro attacks, it increases to 50 Flames. King attacks and it drops to 40 flames. Zoro strikes again and it increases to 70 Flames, essentially making Zoro's powerful attacks work against him.
Zoro has to get rid of King's flames and/or wings in order to win.
EDIT: King is pretty much Urouge is steroids. Urouge can convert damage to power at the cost of endurance. King can convert damage to power and durability, with his ancient zoan making him recover to 100%.
