The issue is not if he can handle it or not.
It's that doing anything to the fire is out of the realms for him.

The only route is overwhelm King defense so he changes into speed mode but without enough AP that's not happening.

thanks, but it looks like you have a negative perspective on pride. imo honor and pride are very similar.
by the end of the arc during kata's short flashback, it was revealed that kata decided to make everyone fear how perfect he is (an unreasonable conceit of one's own superiority in talents ), which means that he won't accept help during battle, that sound a lot like pride imho.

Luffy made kata become a better person
Kata was someone who lived his life as someone who is not himself... never falling on his back and stuff like that and so he stayed fake to himself but Luffy made him realize he don't have to be like this somehow and kata started respecting Luffy and was enjoying the fight but that dumb kid interrupted which made the fight easier for kata so he couldn't enjoy it until they get back to fairground
So kata did what he did
and yes proud or honor can be taken as negative or positive... it depends on what is the topic and perspective

Yes, King beats him in endurance and stamina, he can regenerate the damage he takes and his stamina while he fights because of his his ancient zoan DF. Katakuri cant do that.

In comparison to KK? Rooftop Zoro's offensive output was head and shoulder above Katakuri, and King dominated that.

Because of his durability, not because of his AP.
