Zoro explicitly wanted to knock Kaido down, and explicitly used everythign he had into that attack, using what is known as his ultimate attack.
It didn't knock Kaido down, Kaido said he should be happy enough for what he achieved (even if he failed to knock him down), a moment later Luffy awakens and knocks Kaido down using base blows with adv CoC, something Zoro couldn't do going all out in his special mode.

Then Luffy fought Kaido 1vs1 for 20-30 mins, coming off of a knockout and learning adv CoC as he went along.
