I think Kaido powers up and starts kicking Luffy's face in a bit more, but then Luffy ends the chapter with new Gear 4th Form or Gear 5th for sure.

Next chapter should be named: Gear 5th or Lionman / Tigerman. Just like Snakeman back in the day.

- The Japanese name is “酒 龍 八卦” which would roughly translate as “Eight Trigrams Dragon Sake”. It is a variant of Kaidou's Raimei Hakke (Eight Trigrams Thunder).

Finally back to the main event of Onigashima that will occupy us for the rest of Wano

Kaido starting to use variants of his techniques, showing he had not used his strongest attacks yet(Oda always reserve those for the climax of battles)

And it makes sense the focus is on the main antagonist named moves yet to increase the tension before Luffy showing something to turn the tables in his favor

I like Luffy, but my love for Luffy is also my source of disappointment that Oda completely holds back the character's potential in growing besides some random new battle form.

I dont't think he was that much retconned. His story inside WOW made some of his motivations more clear. But yea he was pretty reckless.

Him bodying Xe'ra then Sargeras in the same expansion was cool as fuck to see.
