It's explicitly shown that someone of the caliber of Duke Hyou (in which we already know Shin will surpass) with pure instinct can defeat an army led by a strategist, and needed a Riboku/Houken pair to bring him down.

Strategy is what got Ouki cornered and therefore slayed. No different for Shin.
And no Ouki was about to beat Houken's ass, but he was actually cornered and outamarted that was the main reason he got killed.
