This is low key genius. Oda implies one chapter before Kaido defeats Luffy, that a Victor don't need a epithet, yet Kaido defeated Luffy the next chapter and Oda as the narrator box itself writes: Victor: Kaido "King of the Beasts".

But why does he did it? The answers is Simple: Kaido never won a serious fight with a strong in opponent in a fair way, Oden, Luffy Kaido only won due to tricks and Third persons involving in a fight.

Kaido is miserable, a drunk and full of sadness because he was never a real Victor.

I don't think it's meant to be understood in such literal way; here lies a translation issue because the Japanese term "makurakotoba" is quite idiosyncratic, but one of the best explanations I've come across defines it as "filler" words in the sense that they don't modify the meaning of the term they accompany but stress and embelish it; this is indeed translated as "epithet" in many languages, but we shouldn't understand it in the sense of "Kaido, the King of the Beasts" but more like "white snow". This type of epithet with an emphatic function (we know that snow is white, but stressing it adds rhetorical weight) is called epithetum constans.

When Luffy addresses that samurai are strong Kaido confronts him as if "strong samurai" was equivalent to "white snow", and that's exactly why he states that winners don't need makurakotoba: because if you demonstrate you're strong you don't need to support it with an epithetum constans since it's already obvious from your victory; hence why Kaido wonders whether samurai aren't really strong but pretend to be it by building this facade, like grey snow pretending to be white by presenting itself with such epithet.

So I'm afraid you and everybody who is understanding "epithet" as "King of the beasts", "Straw hat", "Surgeon of death"... aren't really getting what a makurakotoba is, in my opinion. Of course I could be wrong since it isn't an easy topic.

Lord kaido is the strongest in the verse, kaido would have never Lost to Luffy ever. He already destroyed 5 condoms. Now joyboy will come and finish him or whatever BS Oda chose to dive in, never mind

At least Oda had the guts to announce the winner of the rooftop battle, and he kept his promise of kaido never losing a 1v1. The cp0 interference is useless, Waido would not have fallen for 10kkg in a row, even if that connected while Luffy already Said he Lost cause he has no Haki left.

Kaido even didnt bother that his ennemies got external helps/lunch breaks/whatever, he even let them freely hit him just for fun cause why not lol. Luffy is a joke character when it comes to 1v1, he never bother getting external helps/running away to reload Haki and then pretend he won. If kaido got Luffy non existent honor spirit, he would have never been depressed After oden fight, he would be happy right now as he won againt Luffy.
