Wano was a prime opportunity for him to improve his arsenal with kairoseki weapons before going to Onigashima

I don’t know about this but I am not disturbed by it, he’s rubber and the gorosei said that the awakening gives his rubber properties an exponential evolution, so it would make sense for him to be able to grab thunder, but still we have to wait and see how it is drawn and explained
