The issues are bigger than just one character trait (like Emma's idealistic optimism). The entire structure of the conflict has been messy, as it's not been built on solid character work that fits the narrative.
The author said in an interview he intentionally created the characters to be flat and underdeveloped to keep the aura of mystery and unpredictability. However, that trait completely disconnected me from any decisions the characters make as the series heads towards its conclusion.
