General & Others One Piece story has become a consumer product rather than an actual story.

Oda did say that he would change the ending if anybody were to predict it. I wonder how many drafts/changes he went through after this.
According to one of Oda's former editors, that was a joke, and the ending has been something Oda has had in mind since he started the series, and he would never change it, even if a fan accurately guessed it.

"According to Isaki, Oda never meant it The author has long planned the ending and he obviously wouldn't throw away all of his years of planning for such a useless reason like a fan deriving the path of the narrative. In summary, it is now evident that The story, circulated as absolute truth, was nothing more than a joke from the author."

At the end of the day Oda has only been sleeping 3 hours a day since forever and cut on family time in order to bring this to existence. Money is probably only relatively important to him. :josad:

Dang this thread makes me proud.

I think I understand now why these successful mangas are ending so abruptly even though there sales are breaking records like JJK and Demon Slayer. It is because the publishing company learned a way to maximize profits by creating short generic series and then banking immensely by the announcement of the end of their manga. For example look at Demon Slayer, it went to 80+ million copies just because it was ending. And JJK is going through a similar trend now because it is ending.

When Demon Slayer announced its ending, sales of volumes increased substantially where the anime also helped a lot, take a look:

JJK is on the same path:

So don't be surprised if we continue to get mangas like JJK and Demon Slayer moving forward.

However, this doesn't always work for example Naruto. When its ending was announced sales were still in a sharp decline. Also MHA is planning to end this year but its sales have seen no jump.

For One Piece we can speculate that it may either turn out like Naruto since it already has so many volumes and its sales per volume have been on a steady decline for years now or it may continue its current sales pace even with an announcement of its end like MHA.

What do you guys think? Am I talking out my ass?

With its current writing, I am not betting on OP sales to improve.

Same here bud.

I'm feeling Oda style is becoming more and more stale.
A post on Manga Sub-Reddit said that, as far as quality and sales go, Shueisha is carried by Shonen Jump Plus, mainly due to the Holy Trinity of Shonen Jump Plus (Spy x Family, Dandadan, Kaiju No. 8), instead of Shonen Jump, where their flagship manga (One Piece) did fuck all in its biggest arc and continue showing a steep decline in writing quality.

I also read that Shonen Jump is axing mangas left and right, whereas Plus is thriving.

The effect of his ardent refusal to break the formula line is starting to show in OP sales, tbh. I am sure that one of the reasons SXF becomes the current best selling manga is because it consistently offers something fresh.

For me its actually the opposite, the TS had two major arcs where half of the Straw Hats had to go for uninteresting side characters to take the spotlight. One Piece's greatest strength has always lied in its main cast, their camaraderie, and the people around them. If you take that away the quality of the story will go down.

Oda can still offer great moments but hype is worthless if the payoff doesn't live up to it.

We cannot discuss your last because of the spoilers, obviously, but, damn, that's a good way of putting it, man.

You can just look at the sheer difference in quality in pace between the Baroque work saga vs the DD saga

DR has loads of characters introduced that I can't remember and because of this we spent a whopping 102 chapters on that island. In contrast, the Crocodile saga covers 117 chapters and we get to visit Reverse Mountain, Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, Drum, and Alabasta against the Doflamingo saga with 148 with only PH and DR. It makes the NW look smaller in scale in comparison to Paradise.

Look at all the places we have visited in part 1 !

That's a good graphic. Never thought I would ever say this, but that comparison means that Oda's storytelling ambition post-TS surpasses his storytelling skills. :peperain:
