Questions & Mysteries Why doesnt OP have iconic attacks & villains?

#25
It’s pretty wild that the most iconic villains from one piece are Crocodile, Arlong and Buggy, all characters from 23 years back lol.

Same with moves, I feel like Diable Jambe and Luffy’s early attacks like gum gum pistol or gum gum bazooka are wide spread but everything else is pretty obscure.
In a poll luffy's gatling was first, daizen sekai second and diable jambe 3rd

Dumb thread regarding attacks. Luffy’s attacks and forms are iconic. Just because it isn’t as accepted in the West as Naruto or DBZ doesn’t mean that it isn’t. As for villains, it is because One Piece is typically arc to arc. One Piece has great villains (Crocodile, Doffy, Enel, Akainu, Katakuri, etc.), but does not have a great overarching villain. Why? Because Luffy’s struggle to get to the top has him fighting a number of different competitors. When Imu’s appearance is revealed, that will really be Oda’s time to shine with a villain… at least I hope he does (Kaido was a letdown, after all).

Despite growing sale numbers and popularity, OP remained a relatively niche series outsise of japan until Marineford brought a huge influx of people to watch/read it. DBZ, Pokémon and Naruto in comparison achieved worldwide success pretty early on.

It’s a number of reasons:

- One Piece wasn’t as popular in the West compared to when these other series were at their peaks on Cartoon Network/Toonami.

- Luffy’s abilities aren’t as out of the ordinary as Goku’s, Naruto’s etc compared to superheroes already present in the West. Stretching or rubber powers named after weapons (pistol, rifle, axe, etc) simply don’t pique interest like the more esoteric names like “Kamehameha” or “Ransengan.” Kids at that age are drawn to things that they don’t consider as typical as what they usually get.

- For villains, the overarching antagonists of One Piece are a collective in the form of the World Government and independent pirate groups. Someone like Frieza was a lot of kids first exposure to such a big bad, so naturally he ends up being more popular and iconic. Aizen is a bit less so but also was the main antagonist for the bull of the series.

Yes, the episode covering chapter 923 wasn't very lively, people should be screaming Raime Hakki the same way they scream kamehameha.

I think the main reasons are
1. unlike bleach where almost everyone as the same power up (bankai) one piece as different named moves, even naruto as people having the same attacks like susano, rasengan etc
2. luffy does not repeat the same move every single time unlike naruto that finishes all his fight with rasengan
3. luffys move don't look the same unlike dragon balls where every non hand to hand combat attacks look exactly the same.
4. oda is bad at making good villains
5. one piece is not has popular as db and naruto

I think it’s also in part of a lack of posing. Like Naruto’s shadow clone jutsu Gokus kamehameha have very distinct poses that are super obvious to tell what the move is before and after it’s activation.

Oda doesn’t do that typically.

Nobody talks about Aizen or Madara outside of dedicated fans of those series

and the reason One Piece attacks aren't mentioned as often as Kamehameha, Rasengan, Shadow Clone Jutsu, etc, is simply because they're either not as cool or harder to imagine yourself doing

the closest imitation a normal person could do to the most iconic One Piece move, Gomu Gomu no Pistol, would just be a regular punch. It doesn't have any fanciful movements a regular human could copy
