Akainu never had an elemental advantage against Aokiji, Magma is semi solid not plasma like fire.
Aokiji can freeze an ocean in a second.
Punk hazard is proof they counter each other. I'd argue Aokiji able to counter Akainu is what made the fight an extreme fight
