Much earlier than that. People thought Nami was going to eat it before Carrot even existed. The fruit fit the 2/9 theory, so people thought either Monet would join or someone would eat the fruit since the very same arc, Oda showed Smiley dying and the axtotl fruit coming back and infecting an apple nearby
