If given the chance Whitebeard would sink Marineford resulting in the loss of the marines, not necessarily defeating the top tiers in the process. Sengoku highlighted how important the island was to the face of the marines and he was sweating buckets from Blackbeard rampaging in it. Shanks presented a new solution more favorible to him than sinking the island.
