Manga says VP discovered lineage factor (,likely with book help) then the WG pursued them. Him and Judge split up after.
Judge then continued the research ON HIS OWN and learned how to copy life. That's what the manga says. He may be the smartest now, or have the strongest clones but that doesn't deny he's a fraud with a fake 15 years long hype bubble

Scientist use the tools available. VP was a genius on his own, further amplified himself with an appropriate fruit. Soaking up knowledge is part of being a scientist too. Including to know where to find the knowledge in the first place.

Oda definitely took inspiration from Saga's phisicality to shape Arbel.
Both fights ended mid-air too..

Not just that, look at Wyper as well - King looks distinctly like him with the tattoo on the left eye and the wings etc,

Imo, He took from Marco (Fire ability/Flying Zoan), Katakuri (Face reveal + Killing fodders after), Zoro (Promise to not lose) & Wyper (Design) to make Alber.

I don't like the brain fruit and him merely copying Clover's discoveries myself but he's clearly portrayed above Judge.

He’s not a fraud in OP verse nor is he scummy.
The issue is that from a perspective of a reader the whole Vegapunk reputation sounds cheesy. No one is blaming him for reading books lol. But as a character hyped for 15 years as the most brilliant, 500 years ahead of his time etc etc, it’s still kinda hilarious that he had 2 major advantages limited only to him.

He’s no longer special, nor worked harder than the other MADS necessarily. If these tools were available to the other team members we would have had the same result, which is not something you expect after this hype.
