Does anybody know all the official pirate roles we've seen but don't have?
On the top of my head i can think of ship gaurd and apprentice

Cabaji is technically cheif of staff not second mate
Interesting I didn't remember those two called "ship guardian".

But I doubt we will have one anyway. A ship guardian would need to stay on the ship, meaning that they wouldn't participate in the adventure.

UNLESS, they are using some kind of clone jutsu stuff..

Yeah idk really how a ship guardian would work either tbh
Maybe the sunny's klabautermann or some Inanimate object can be given a devil fruit and then protect it

What roles are missing?

Dunno man, use this to search

Has lookout ever been an official position we've seen on a crew?

We never saw archeaologist , or shipright or snipper or musician before the characters that did these roles came about.

And most of those roles don't align at all, with real life piracy.

Lookout tho, it's extremlly iconic. And honestly one of the few legit roles you can still have, that isn't pure cartoon logic.

Look having a lookout is much better than a ship guardian ( although that's what i think Yamato could have been and it's been a plot point sometimes)

Not only that but you guys need to understand that the look out role is not a simple role that we are predicting..

Yes.. granted.. it was not officialized (I think), but it was depicted in whole cake more than anywere else in the story. And not only with Carrot:

- The role has been depicted greatly during the escape and most importantly in chapter 888 through secondary character (I will tell you my interpretation on that later).
- It was also depicted as a position to hold by Pedro multiple times.

Not only that but it was also one of the things that linked the beginning and the ending of chapter 823 (the reintroduction of Carrot):
- Vivi at the look out point jumping down
- Pedro at the look out point juming up

Now.. there is everything surrounding Carrot.
- The way she was depicted as a natural look out on her first introduction
- The way she took the place of Pedro
- The way she acted during the escape

And finally like I told you, there is 888. Which is literally an hymn to the look out position:
- Daifuku's name on the look out multiple times
- Carrot on the look out noticing the pinch with a double page spread
- Carrot's transformation taking place on the post
- Carrot jumping point being the look out post

The entire 888 chapter is - for me - thematically centered around the notion of "looking at". In the first page of the chapter, Carrot is looking at everyone and the battlefield, she is in her base form, and in the second part, everyone else is looking at her, because of how mystic and powerful she is.

That switch is perfectly in synch with Carrot's characterization on and out of the post.

Hence why I often say that Carrot is written as a natural look out.

This level of thematic writing is not something trivial..

Pedro the Ship Guardian foreshadowing connection:
  • Captain of the Guardians
  • Cat themed Nyaban Brothers
  • Portmanteau Ninjaguardian = Ninja + Guardian = Nin + Jaguar + Dian (Dyin')
Case closed.

Yeah someone doesn't necessarily need to have a used role before joining its just interesting to know which oda has already highlighted

A lookout isn't impossible

I guess carrot technically has potential to join just as much as momo or vivi. Them all being royalties now and close with the rs

This late in the series, the next crewmate's ship role should have been foreshadowed, hinted, or in hindsight understood from character perspective.
  • Captain: Luffy was aiming to surpass Captain Shanks.
  • First Mate Swordsman: The first person Luffy recruited. Similar with Roger's First Mate Swordsman. Luffy is not good with swordmanship.
  • Navigator: Koby tells Luffy he will need a navigator. Luffy and Zoro get lost at sea. Zoro compliments Nami' s navigation before they met.
  • Sniper: Yasopp was in Chapter 1. Luffy being crewmates with a child who's father is in Luffy's favorite crew may not be obvious but makes sense. Luffy has Pistol Punches.
  • Cook: Luffy likes to eat plus mentions wanting a cook multiple times.
  • Doctor: A necessity. Crew was bound to get hurt and sick. Tried recruiting Crocus and Kureha.
  • Archeologist: A necessity for plot progression to get to One Piece. The History of the Void Century is the mystery a historian would unravel.
  • Shipwright: Someone has to fix the boat better than Usopp. Usopp was adamant about that before Franky.
  • Musician: Luffy only wanted a musician since... near the beginning of the series! With an afro!! And friends with Laboon!!!
  • Helmsman: Jinbe became more obvious throughout the series. His ship position... not so much. Helmsman. Lifeguard. Quartermaster. Fireguard. Bodyguard. Etc. But only Helmsman was in an intro box via Jesus Burgess.
A lookout role has been shown in action but never mentioned in an intro box. Why? Well what does a lookout do? A big responsibility is to make sure the ship doesn't get unexpected damaged or get caught in looming danger. A lookout in a sense defends the ship. A Ship Guardian of sorts. The crew lost a ship before in Merry. And Sunny has been attacked on multiple occasions. A lookout being a subset under the role Ship Guardian is my interpretation.
True
Would he push him this hard if he felt he was dead?
Pedro is the only one worthy. Dead or Alive.
