With the latest SBS confirmation, we can officially say that neither Luffy, Zoro or Sanji are actually self made powerful combatants, and instead rely a lot on outside factors to help them grow in power. With focus on special genes, as its a common factor between all three.
Luffy:
-Genetics: Monkey D. Garp's grandson and Dragon's son (The hero of the marines and Leader of the Revolutionary army respectively).
-Inherited CoC from his lineage.
-Devil Fruit: The Mythical Zoan God Nika fruit that hasn't been awakened for 800 years from the times of Joyboy that eluded the World Government since those times. Gives him the power of imagination, with implication that the fruit itself chose Luffy.
Zoro:
Lineage: Descendant of Ryuma the legendary samurai of Wano and God of The Blade who managed to protect Wano from the World Government.
Likely inherited CoC from that side of his family as well.
-Weapons: Zoro was handed high grade swords from multiple people: Wado he got after Kuina's death, Enma he inherited from Oden. Enma especially taught him how to flow his haki which aided him against Kaido and King, his two toughest fights so far.
Sanji:
-Genetics: Perhaps a point used a lot against Sanji, as he is engineered to be strong. His durability and heat resistance come from those genes, which also allow him to use his strongest attacks without self harm(Diable&Ifrit Jambe). Of course, the exoskeleton is also unique to Germa.
This thread was done with a bit of speed so I may have missed some parts for any of the three characters, but by now it is obvious that in the world of One Piece you are bound by your "Fate" and "Lineage" which I see as contradictory to a story whose main character seeks freedom more than anything.
