Why did he draw that colorspread at all? Oda could have skipped Shiryu or that colorspread altogether. Not saying Shiryu>Kuzan, but "readers' didnt know" is a bad argument.

There are two types of Zoro fans, one is the type that trashes Zoro's opponents so that Zoro would look godly at the end. The other one is hyping up Zoro's opponents so that Zoro would look good at the end after defeating them.

Kinda reminds me of how there are two factions of Zoro fans trashing on King and wanking King although the former started to hype King the moment Zoro started fighting him. Same thing will repeat with Shiryu here.

Does it make any sense at all that Shiryu is comparable to King or Marco? But then Luffy achieves his (first) goal by beating his captain?

That panel was for the strongest of each crew (excluding captains).
At the time when Oda drew it, we already knew Kuzan joined Blackbeard's crew.

Its highly possible Zolo's final battle is Shiryu, not Mihawk. Government might fall before finding One Piece, Oda's direct statement and the last poneglyph is probably with the government.
