The Legend Of Zelda Discussion Thread

Said a few months ago I figured this would be more Super Mario Galaxy 2 than Majora’s Mask.

Having played for a couple of hours, think that’s the case.

Pretty mild spoilers and first impressions (gameplay, not story)

From early play it will be better than BotW. More to do, better story, wider variety of enemies, dungeons. The core gameplay loop is much the same though. Shrines, Koroks, Memories, beat a camp, get a chest, map towers. The opening sequence is pretty much Great Plateau 2.0. I’m not seeing a mask equivalent, or a three day cycle equivalent, that made MM so different from OoT despite sharing the same engine. There’s the Zonai gear and wider exploration. But I still think that’s an expansion of what we saw in BotW, rather than entirely new forumula.

That sounds probably a bit negative- I‘ve very much enjoyed what I’ve played so far, and expect to throughly enjoy the rest of the game. A curious praise is that it’s kind of hard to see why anyone would replay BotW after this.

Ultimately, I’d still like the next main game to go back to a more traditional item based Zelda, with Pieces of Heart, rupee’s under shrubs and pottery, dungeons, with a new core gameplay feature (equivalent to sailing, masks, Wolf Link, flying etc).

Long time ago i played BotW.It didnt have Heartpieces?
Kind of.

After every shrine you got an orb, four of the orbs could be swapped for a heart container (or a stamina boost). And iirc you got a heart container after every Divine Beast.

I preferred the old way where you could find pieces of heart randomly as a sidequest or just hidden in the world. I enjoy that more than “there’s a shrine, solve the puzzle, get the orb, repeat x4”

Ah yeah, now i remember.Thats why i had barely hearts without Foodboost

I will not buy ToK as the coregameplay is still like BotW.I will watch the bossfights and cutscenes on YT and call it a day

Guys I know ToTK just released but I just got Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD by homebrewing my Wii U. Super excited to play these games after I finish OoTHD and MMHD.

I'm also probably going to revisit BoTW and then I'll get ToTK. Fuck I'll probably even buy Skyward Sword HD.

Basically trying to play all of the 3D Zelda games this summer lol, I'm in for a long ride.

So with another half day’s play.

I don’t really care about exploring Hyrule again.

On the other hand, I absolute love the new areas like the Sky Islands
and underground. I would have loved a new overworld, with sky and underground. Wouldn’t even have cared much if the overworld wasn’t quite as big as Hyrule.

Hyrule has changed so much it’s crazy. I think I already like this game better than elden ring.

Today I finished the first dungeon: The Wind Temple. Puzzles were more challenging, more enemy variety and overall better dungeon design than any Divine Beast (which isn't that much of a difficult task tbh). And finally, the boss was SOO FREAKING COOL!!! Overall, I give this dungeon a 8/10. And if the other dungeons are even better than this one, TotK dungeons can easily rival that of the other 3D Zelda dungeons.

The overworld is also highly improved. I generally enjoy the caves and the underground the most. Especially the underground. It's like you enter a different game genre when you're in the underground.

Again, it's an understatement that BotW is the demo. It just proves once again how lackluster the Divine Beasts were. A shame considering how amazing their initial design were.

BOTW obviously was in part a test to see how good of an open world and exploration game The Legend of Zelda could be, and they didn't get to put everything they wanted in here. With BOTW being a success, they could add things and better the system in TOTK.
