I agree he meant to do that, but then he had a phone call, got distracted and set his mind on finding Luffy without looking back to confirm they are actually dead. When he left, all that remained was a natural environment, which King can easily survive.
As long the status here is "Alive" I will not belive him dead. I believe his role in the story isn't finished yet.
