He would use pistols or claws if he wasn't holding back. He wanted Ace in his crew thats why he hold back, didn't want to fight him. He first attacked the island, not to Ace and told him just watch, wanted to show the power difference between himself and Ace by just using barehands.

Ace is also underrated, he fought Jinbe and Yamato equally before even being Yonko commander and reaching his prime, Pre-Prime Rookie Ace fought Shichibukai Jinbe for 5 days, then get up right after and fought WB and took an attack, and still didn't get KOed.
