Logias, with the exception of the darkness fruits, are natural elements that also share the intangibility trait. Otherwise you could also claim the Noro particles are a natural element and should be a logia, and so are earthquakes, and plenty other examples.
If logia's only trait was being natural elements they wouldn't be an OP category.

Shadows aren't naturally occurring. Darkness is. To block light and create a shadow is an ability rather than a force of nature. In summation a shadow is more of an abstract idea created by man. If you think of it as shade nothing in life completely blocks light out. A little light allways exist even in the darkest of regions. Not taking into account a blackhole. It was man who looked at his feet and decided to call it a shadow.

To understand my view of Devil Fruits types, though, you must understand Paramecia as involving physical things, Logia as involving chemical things, and Zoan as involving Biological things.

Aokiji's ability to create ice is related to a physical change in the chemical composition of water. Something along these lines. Unique changes in chemical makeup. Environments are included like swamps, and forests, because they create unique chemical compositions for things.
