Both designs are quite cool, but Kata is slightly better for me. Liked his "imperfection" and how it drives his character.

Now that I think of it, if I were simply shown both characters without any context, the choice could be more difficult for me, they have the same vibe of edgy rock stars, however, as I like Kata more as a character, I ended up voting for him.

Don't forget the real Rockstar

Close but Kata when I take everything into consideration. Fresh design, and cool fighting ability, I just like his aesthetic better. King especially with his mask off is still one of the best designs though, he reminds me of Sephiroth. I especially like the face tatt but I like Kat’s tattoos better.
Both of them are amongst Oda’s finest creations though, he hasn’t really missed with a right hand’s design.

It's Katakuri.

King is, first and foremost, not visually original since it's just Oda inserting the Angel of Retribution from a cover by Judas Priest:

Since King was introduced as a torture lover Oda emphasizes it with a medieval shame mask, probably this one:

Problem is that Oda never really worked with this, which is King's biggest flaw because the design is clearly oriented to conveying character traits that are never touched upon (retribution and torture both relate to punishment). Sure, King without mask is well drawn and fits the canon for cool character (this holds no actual value regarding his quality, though, but the average reader mistakes cool design with good desgin), although his overall design has always felt overdone to me.

That said, he is still deeply unoriginal.

While Katakuri isn't among my favorites either he has a lot more going on than King. His design is kind of interesting in the sense that totally conveys the facade theme that came to define the character: he plays the cool, perfect sibling that distances from the habits of his own family, hence why he looks spiky and dark (which convey sour and bitter flavors) in a crew mainly defined by round and pink aesthetics (which convey sweet flavors). This also contrasts his powers since mochi is white, round and soft (the opposite to Katakuri both in aesthetics, imposed personality and name —Ks and Ts sound sharp and hard), which makes interesting oxymorons like a club of spiky black mochi. Everything ultimately serves the character trait of a person who in truth is quite like his family (loves to lay down and eat candy) but pretends to be cool and collected.

Again, I'm not quite into Katakuri's design, but from an analytic point of view it serves his character and role perfectly and also brings creative ideas like the oxymoronic usage of mochi, which King fails to.

Kata with the fur scarf looked pretty cool. I'd even accept his strange mouth as something that doesn't bother me because of his backstory. I like the design of his leather pants and vest, but I don't very much like his pink tatoo and especially his short pink hair. Also, his body proportions, with his legs too long for his body, yet not related to the long-leg tribe, disturb me when I look at him.

King's proportions, on the other hand, are perfect. His legs are long but not in a way that makes his upper body look squeezed in proportion (as it is with Katakuri). His large black wings and fire give him an air of a menacing angel. His wide chest is so sexy with jacket open or closed. His entire outfit is so cool with leather and metal. I find each of his facial features (eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, tattoo, small beard) separatey, and of course their combination, extremely handsome. His hair is the coolest hairdo, so much that I adopted it to myself (except the shaven part above his left ear, I don't have the courage to shave it). His side-braid flying about when he's fighting, I can't get enough of it. In my eyes, he is the most handsome character in One Piece.

King had a cool design when masked and got even better without it.

Katakuri had an OK design with face covered and got thrash when he removed it.

King is, first and foremost, not visually original since it's just Oda inserting the Angel of Retribution from a cover by Judas Priest:
What kind of argument is that? You might as well say that the admirals are not visually original because Oda "copied" the faces of real life famous actors onto his characters? It's called inspiration. Oda has been inspired by many things right from the first page of One Piece. And he was (probably) inpired by the picture on this album for King's design, it doesn't make it any less original than any other character design, inpired by who knows what.

And btw, according to wiki, King's mask is inspired by yet another album, a Japanese album called " Hide Your Face".
