Big Mom did not need King. She needs someone with Lunarian race in her crews to complete her dream. If she encountered random lunarian, she would ask that Lunarian to join her crews regardless of that Lunarian power level. She wanted Brook and Chopper in her crews because she thought both were from the races that did not exist in her crews.

Katakuri's whole character is cosplaying King. Pretending to be an alpha, tough badass and dressing like a punk just to hide his real beta nature, while King just is the alpha Katakuri pretends to be.

All Charlotte siblings were convinced about Katakuri superiority.
Katakuri joined RHP for 1 minute and he already got Howling Gab respect. In cover page Howling Gab was the follower while Katakuri was the leader. King was in BP for 40 years but he cannot convince Flying Six of his superiority. I wonder why

Katakuri has better design by a fucking wide margin
King design wise is just a mix between Marco and Kata
While Kata was original and fresh, King was just recycled.
They try too hard with King design : leather, flame, spikes, sword, wings, full black, fire etc etc
King would have been far better without the mask since the beginning. His Albert lunarian face is indeed cool. But it came far too late in the game.
Even mask off King has a weaker design that Kata but at least he feels like a real character

The Flying 6 were arrogant (hell, WW thought he was comparable to Lucci in any way) and ambitious men who had reached a very high position inside of a crew of strong monsters, three of which monsters are worth more than Katakuri, and they were aiming for the top, and always had the chance to become YC1 just by defeating or surpassing King, but as you said, no one surpassed King in that time, who actually remained invincible.
The Big Mom Pirates were vastly different. Katakuri was cool and strong, the strongest of the crew (below Big Mom obviously), but the whole crew composition, motivations and the links between them were different, you could actually see healthy sibling admiration for Katakuri.
