Koby is the definition of hard work and busting his ass in a story where most people at the top have a special lineage. People irl know working hard can only get you so far and I think are a bit jealous of Koby, others like me and I think most Koby stans are inspired.
His story is zero to hero and people are just mad we didn't see his growth little by little.
I've said it before and I'll say it again he's the superior version of Usopp.

People who compare Usopp to Coby (no matter which one they think is better) scare me. Usopp: tragic past; even before meeting Luffy, the desire to protect dear people; self-education (in different things) ; cowardice; the desire to become a brave and worthy person; self-praise to hide self-doubt. Coby: modesty and indecision; life began after Luffy; Luffy is the first person to become dear to him; self-doubt and self-deprecation; a more concrete and less romantic dream.
Even their cowardice is different. Coby was a coward who won't budge out of fear. Usopp was a coward who will run away out of fear.
+ Usopp is funny and charismatic. Coby is serious.
