One route they could go to really make its own is play on the eccentric characters of the series. If it is received well and gets a second season, then it could be that huge cast weirdo quirky fun pirate series (which is essentially what OP is) for the regular new audience.

Then exciting casting choices and the costumes can absolutely be the fun part beyond the plot and story.
