To battle their gender disphoria, they need therapy. And the results of it will wary from person to person. Some might still off themselves even after having therapy, people refering to them with proper pronouns, etc etc.
That's the thing. I know how those therapy work. And the goal of those therapies is to end gender disphoria (which is a mental illness not a a state that is immuable.) that leads to most suicide. To end gender disphoria, those tool are used :
- Simple therapy (meaning speaking with a
- Ask for a change in the environment of the person (it can lead to meeting with parents to make them understand the problem and therefore being more inclusive of their child for example)
- A change of "identity" (With a name, with new pronouns)
- A medical treatment for anxiety and other trouble caused by gender disphoria.
So let me rephrase what you said: From what I understand, you think that suicide can't be prevented and that trans people with gender disphoria must pass through therapy which leads factually to the treatment of gender disphoria and therefore less suicide.
Do you understand the contradiction here ?
Sex- what a man/woman is
Gender- what a man/woman does and how they could dress, act and contribute to society.
Close but not quite. That's not the scientific definition.
For a more precise definition you can for example look at the definition of "the world health organisation":
"
Sex refers to “
the different biological and physiological characteristics of males and females, such as reproductive organs, chromosomes, hormones, etc.”
Gender refers to "the socially constructed characteristics of women and men – such as norms, roles and relationships of and between groups of women and men "
Okay. So why do you think it is?
Good question. Because precisely, the way we shape the langage will influence the way we shape society.
If - for example - we introduce more pronons for more inclusivity - we will automatically have a langage more inclusive for person that are non binary or trans, which will automatically lead to more acceptance from the public and more tolerance on a subconsient level.
But don't lure yourself here, the battle for a more inclusive langage is just a tiny (around 5%) part of the battle for more inclusivity in society. In fact the english langage is already inclusive ("they" exist). Languages like french are not.
